Resolution Authorizing Direct Affiliation with the AFL-CIO and
Withdrawal from the Associated Actors and Artistes of America

07-CVR-01

Whereas, since its inception as the American Federation of Radio Artists, AFTRA has been a Branch of the Associated Actors and Artistes of America (the “Four As”); and

Whereas, over the past 70 years, AFTRA has evolved from a union of actors working in radio drama into a national union of actors, performers, recording artists, journalists and other media workers employed across a wide spectrum of the media and entertainment industries; and

Whereas, it is in the best interest of AFTRA’s members that, in addition to maintaining cooperative relationships with other Branch unions of the Four As, AFTRA expand its working relationships with unions directly affiliated with the AFL-CIO; and

Whereas
, AFTRA’s role and responsibility as a union comprised of actors, performers, recording artists, journalists and other media workers employed by consolidated, multinational corporations increasingly will require that it explore entering into new cooperative and strategic relationships with unions directly affiliated with the AFL-CIO; and

Whereas, after 70 years of growth and expansion, it is time for AFTRA to enter into an affiliation that will maximize its ability to organize the unorganized, build new alliances and thereby reach its full potential in the 21st century;

Now Therefore Be It Resolved that, upon notice to the delegates of the 2007 AFTRA Convention on the first day of Convention, the Convention has convened a special session for the sole consideration of AFTRA withdrawing from the Four As and seeking a direct national charter from the AFL-CIO;

Be It Further Resolved that, after due consideration at such special session, the 2007 Convention authorizes the National Board to take the steps necessary to obtain a full AFL-CIO charter and become a direct national affiliate of the AFL-CIO; and

Be It Further Resolved that, upon satisfactory completion of the steps necessary to obtain an AFL-CIO charter, the National Board is authorized to effectuate a direct affiliation with the AFL-CIO and a corresponding withdrawal from the Four As; and

Be It Further Resolved that it is the intention of the 2007 Convention that, should AFTRA become a direct affiliate of the AFL-CIO, it will nonetheless continue cooperative working relationships with the Four As and its Branches.
