Hello fellow AFTRAns!

Mark your calendars! Monday, October 27, 2008, is the date for this year's Lend Me An Ear! The 5th Annual LMAE! will once again be performed at the New American Shakespeare Tavern as a fundraiser for the Atlanta Community Food Bank. The theme will be "Comedy Tonight!"

We're planning to conduct auditions on Monday, October 6 at the AFTRA/SAG office and the rehearsals will be at the Tavern on Mondays October 13 and 20, the former being the date of the first read-thru. When we get closer to September, we'll be updating you with more details. Come join in the camaraderie and fun for a good cause!

On July 20, your Local AFTRA Board and SAG Council had the good fortune to meet with AFTRA First National Vice President Bob Edwards here in Georgia for a "Blue Jeans Brunch with Bob." In addition to hearing his thoughts about AFTRA and its future, and being regaled with stories about his beginnings in news and his former NPR shows and current interview program on XM Satellite Radio, he also shared his views on journalism today, media consolidation, unionism, and the importance of community. The latter was particularly apropos as we were meeting in the Common House in the Lake Claire Co-housing Community in Decatur, a suburb of Atlanta.

He additionally answered questions about his first two books Fridays with Red: A Radio Friendship, about the sportscaster Red Barber, and Edward R. Murrow and the Birth of Broadcast Journalism, his biography about the great newscaster. Bob is currently working on an autobiography and we anxiously await its arrival so that we can get to know him even better.

It is indeed an honor to have someone of Bob's caliber at the National AFTRA leadership level. He is a man who truly cares about unionism and knows its importance in today's world. We thank him wholeheartedly for his time and effort.

That's all for now. Stay tuned for more!
