We Remember George Shangrow

AFTRA Seattle member George Shangrow, 59, a former classical music host at KING-FM, died Saturday in a head-on collision during a driving rainstorm near Winthrop in Okanagan County.

           
Shangrow, a 22-year member of AFTRA, was a prominent leader in Seattle’s classic music world. In addition to formerly hosting the nightly “Live By George” program on KING-FM, he was the founder and musical director of Orchestra Seattle and Seattle Chamber Singers, which he began 40 years ago. He also toured extensively, performing on the piano and harpsichord, as well as conducting operas across the US and abroad.

           
The Seattle Times website reports that Shangrow was on his way to lecture at the annual Methow Valley Chamber Music Festival when an oncoming car crossed the center line of Highway 20 and struck his vehicle. He died at the scene.

           
The 16-year-old driver of the other car suffered fractures and was taken to an area hospital.

In addition to his performing work, Shangrow was also on the faculty of the Seattle Conservatory of Music and taught at Seattle University and Seattle Community College. As well, he directed music at University Christian Church.
