EEO Young Performers

Posted July 20, 2009

The future of all labor organizations will depend on constant renewal from today's youth who need education and guidance in the value of and the moral underpinnings of trade unionism, which through decades of struggle has provided dignity and security to the working men and women of all ages throughout the world. AFTRA is proud to speak on behalf of thousands of minor-aged union members who work in all areas of our many jurisdictions as full members of our union family.

A priority of the National Young Performers Committee is the passage of a national "Coogan Law", based on the American and trade union principles that [a] the person who does the work should own the money their labor produces, irrespective of age, and [b] that mandated employer-provided on-site education should be available on all school days where kids are working.

AFTRA is committed to advancing the welfare of our working children on a state-by-state and national basis and to using our resources to end the 65 year-old exemption of children in the entertainment industry found in the "Newsie provision" of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
