Floyd Abrams: Protect IP Act Does Not Violate First Amendment

Posted May 24, 2011

On May 24, Floyd Abrams, the renowned constitutional law expert and attorney representing AFTRA, DGA, IATSE, SAG and MPAA in our shared effort to fight digital theft, sent a letter to three of the Protect IP Act’s co-sponsors: Sens. Leahy, Grassley and Hatch. Abrams outlines his support for the bill and definitively makes the case that the Protect IP Act does not violate the First Amendment, as opponents of the legislation have argued. Abrams is the nation’s leading expert on the First Amendment and he is a longtime advocate of free speech, having argued many such cases before the US Supreme Court. The Proect IP Act was introduced in the Senate on May 12.
