Call For Convention Volunteers

Dear AFTRA Members:

The 2011 AFTRA National Convention is coming to Seattle, July 15—24, 2011 - and we need your help!  In the days leading up to and during the convention, there will be a number of opportunities for AFTRA members to get involved: we are looking for people to help assemble convention documents and registration materials; to act as “local ambassadors” for the 500-plus delegates, staff, guests, and family members who will be visiting Seattle; to staff hospitality & information booths at the Seattle Westin Hotel & Towers during the convention, and; to assist national and local staff with logistics and support functions.

A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY

The biennial national convention is the principle governing assembly of YOUR union: resolutions debated and   ratified by convention delegates will establish policies and agendas for the union’s activities, and therefore will have a direct bearing on the future direction of AFTRA.  Volunteering during the convention is a great way to not only get an “ear to the ground” perspective on these, and many other issues of importance, but it also provides a unique opportunity to communicate directly with fellow members, staff and officers from around the country. 

IT’S YOUR UNION — GET INVOLVED!

If you are interested in helping out, please contact 2011 Convention Volunteer Coordinator Elicia Walker at eli@seanet.com, or the Seattle Local office, 206-282-2506 by June 17, 2011.  In addition, please let us know if you have any special skills (anything from filing to data-entry to face-painting to juggling - you never know what might come in handy!) along with specific days and times of availability.  A pre-convention orientation meeting will be held in early July, but please feel free to contact us with any questions or for more information.

Even if you’re not available to help out with the Convention, there’s still one thing you CAN do.  We’re looking for recommendations for things attendees can do/see/visit while in Pacific Northwest.  If you have a particular favorite: a restaurant, theatre, music venue, museum, or other attraction, please email a brief note to the address below telling us a little something about it and why you think it’s worth visiting!  And if you’re involved in an activity or event happening during Convention, let us know that too, so we can help spread the word!

One final thing: the Convention Social Night Committee is seeking to borrow vintage radio receivers, microphones, and other small audio/video devices, preferably table-top models, to use as centerpieces for the Convention Social Event.  If you have one you could loan (it will be returned in the same condition as received), please contact Elicia Walker at eli@seanet.com.
